As its full title suggests, Blazing World is a fanciful depiction of a satirical, utopian kingdom in another world (with different stars in the sky) that can be reached via the North Pole. It is "the only known work of utopian fiction by a woman in the 17th century, as well as one of the earliest examples of what we now call 'science fiction' — although it is also a romance, an adventure story, and even autobiography." A young woman enters this other world, becomes the empress of a society composed of various species of talking animals, and organizes an invasion back into her world complete with submarines towed by the "fish men" and the dropping of "fire stones" by the "bird men" to confound the enemies of her homeland, the Kingdom of Esfi.

Very enjoyable read, if taken as the real life Dutchess of Newcastle intended: an imaginative exercise in building a lovelier world.Plenty of political and social commentary there for the taking, but I enjoyed it most for Cavendish's anticipation in 1666 of jet engines, submarines, and zombies. Big fun.

The Description of a New World Called The BlazingWorld Margaret Cavendish 9781542699129 Books Reviews
Not an easy read, but quite enlightening... Apart from the philosophical discourses the interesting thing for me is the descriptions of machines on ships that blow air to calm stormy waves and to fill sails to power the ships, submarines and even a theory that winds are caused by hight and low air pressure equalisation...
Written by Margaret Cavendish, Duchess of Newcastle in latter half of 17th century.
Science bloomed while religion fought to maintain the tyranny it once held. England was in a new Renaissance promoted by the new king. Science and mathematics were explored. Tools of astronomy were created to view the stars. Newton was budding into a brilliant scientist. Men looked beyond their world, thinking there must be more to it. Maybe, there were people up there in those stars. Perhaps, there were parallel universes.
Enter Margaret Cavendish, a woman. Her mind was bright. She wrote of her thoughts that burgeoned onto the most elite of sciences. She spoke of parallel universes, quantum physics, mathematics, measuring vacuums.
Her story 'A New World' was the first science fiction written by a woman. It is of a parallel universe entered through a gate at the North Pole. The land is fantasy, its people fantastical. They revere her as a monarch, and she in turn sends them on missions to answer questions of the universe.
Written in archaic language, it still makes an impression. This is a good read for something so old.
Very enjoyable read, if taken as the real life Dutchess of Newcastle intended an imaginative exercise in building a lovelier world.
